As for the personal, safety-security-privacy part of things, I guess we'll just have to figure that out. We'll see what they say from the legal side of things tomorrow. We're not going to mess with the device in any way. Thank you, in advance, to anyone willing to share their thoughts with me.Įdit: Okay, my first order of business tomorrow morning is to accompany my mom to the local PD and ask them what to do. I know some people have incredibly life-altering, life-or-death situations here, so I hope my situation/question isn't a waste of anyone's time. I guess my main question is "what do we do?" Just talking to someone about this might help clear the chaos in my head right now. I'm not sure what I'm asking here, I feel like I'm rambling. I don't know if I'm looking too deeply into this but right now I feel like the safety, privacy, and sanctity of her home (my childhood home) has been totally robbed. My father abruptly passed away a few years ago so the safety and well-being of my mother has been very important to me over the past couple years (I feel like I hyper-scrutinize male figures in her life lately). I have no idea who did this, when they did it, if anything has been recorded and those recordings accessed, if any additional units exist, etc. ![]() I've asked her to make sure every door and window of her house is securely locked, including her bedroom door, and to keep her phone and any form of protection she has nearby, and to call me if anything at all makes her feel uneasy. I've asked her not to mess around with it, to put the entire unit in a ziplock back, and then in another opaque bag and that we'll discuss this in the morning. it was installed on the bottom-exterior portion of her bathtub (an electrical outlet on a bathtub frame?), and the black camera unit was not masked under the white outlet facade (the black was clearly visible under the white outlet facade). According to the Amazon listing this unit has up to 15 days of battery life when motion-activated, suggesting to me that whoever installed/knew of this camera either recharged it or installed it within the past 15 days.ģ) The unit does not transmit wirelessly but saves all recorded data to a local SD card to be physically retrieved later.Ĥ) The unit was installed in a less-than-professional manner, i.e. I've not yet asked her to provide me with a list of people who've had unsupervised access to her house.Ģ) The red light on the unit was still on. She does have help (maids, handymen, occasional relatives) in her house from time to time. It was just about the first Google search result when I searched for "hidden outlet camera."ġ) She lives alone. It was installed in her bathroom in a way that it directly faced her shower. After studying the photos and then doing some research on different websites online, it appears that someone had installed a battery-powered, motion-activated, hidden camera disguised as a power outlet. So if anything here seems jumbled, please forgive.Ībout twenty minutes ago my mom sends me a few photos via text asking if I could help her identify something she'd found in her bathroom. Okay, to start, I'm in an incredibly uneasy and shocked mood right now. ![]() While we do not accept donations or payment of any kind, we strongly suggest that you support Legal Aid and other public service legal organizations either by donating directly to the Legal Services Corporation or finding your state or local Legal Aid office and donating to them.Ĭontact the subreddit moderators with questions, comments or concerns.
